This was taken when he was a relatively young man, holding one of his children (William). His hair is jet black and thick, as are his features. It's hard for me to believe they are the same individual. Yale has a book out on the exhibit, whose name I can't recall, but the photograph is in it (also the portrait you show).

RetreadAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-25980144481901399762009-02-18T07:40:00.000-08:002009-02-18T07:40:00.000-08:00Thanks, and thanks for reminding me about "A Devil...Thanks, and thanks for reminding me about "A Devil's Chaplain"; I indeed did forget to mention it and the Darwin essay in it is definitely great. Another delicious essay from the book which is very entertaining and incisive is "Postmodernism Disrobed".Wavefunctionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14993805391653267639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-22435518787371408412009-02-17T20:37:00.000-08:002009-02-17T20:37:00.000-08:00I enjoyed reading your post. I have been wanting to read Gould for a long time but haven't gotten to it yet; now I'm doubly inspired.

I didn't find a mention of Dawkins' collection of essays 'A Devil's Chaplain' in your post (or perhaps missed it) but there is an great essay by the name of 'Darwin Triumphant' in the second section; Dawkins delineates in his simple but engaging style, the possibility of Darwinian natural selection being a universal principle. If I remember correctly, an adjoining essay also provides an interesting resurrection of Darwin's sexual selection theory which was invalidated in the early 20th century.

Great post again!Karthik Shekharhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14042591545423745449noreply@blogger.com
