Many things that will protect you from these natural things are "artificial".Wavefunctionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14993805391653267639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-76713074899572222582011-05-19T07:28:39.420-07:002011-05-19T07:28:39.420-07:00This is a great post - a couple of family members ...This is a great post - a couple of family members were talking about wanting to use "natural" remedies before "artificial." I definitely pointed out that arsenic is natural too...Sara Sharpenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-5566915351067654602011-05-18T14:46:03.390-07:002011-05-18T14:46:03.390-07:00Alas, the recent purchase of a getaway cottage in ...Alas, the recent purchase of a getaway cottage in the eastern Sierra Nevada has brought some of those terms home to me. The house is on a thin soil/scree covering over granite. Some granites, including the Sierra Nevada rock our house is built on, emit radon. So I "naturally" have a problem with excess radon.

Then there was the a) mandated well test for the sale of the house, which was focused on toxic bacteria (okay), and b)the detailed water test we did as soon as we bought the house. The well is full of "natural" "chemicals" (including metals), thankfully below recommended maximums for the U.S. (but not below recommended maximums for the E.U.). One of our first tasks as new owners was to put in a water filtering system, including reverse-osmosis, for the drinking water.

Oh, and then there's what we believe is brannerite (a uranium ore) in quartz veins up-drainage of the house...

Caveat emptor! (But it's still a lovely little place and living so close to real, exposed geology is cool.)Karen the geologistnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-23876755371023349362011-05-12T07:10:19.523-07:002011-05-12T07:10:19.523-07:00Very nice. I linked it on our school's blog, http://goo.gl/K9KSd, with some additional comment.

One of my starting jokes with beginners (esp. when teaching at adult workers courses) is: "Do you think it's better drinking water at 99.5% purity or water at less than 85% purity?"

Of course many people choose the former, than I say "All right, you'll drinking our sewage wastewater that is under 0.5% dissolved/dispersed matter, I'll drink a good Chianti or Blauburgunder that contains over 15% impurities, ethanol included...".

Hope you're able to read my comments written in Italian, I've tested on google transl. and it comes out not perfect but fairly understandable.Sergio Palazzihttp://www.kemia.itnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9633767.post-39915227194655232302011-05-11T12:41:10.429-07:002011-05-11T12:41:10.429-07:00As far as chemicals/environment connections usuall...As far as chemicals/environment connections usually being negative I find it strange that at same time "chemistry" in context of a team or dating relationships is congruent with only positiveness. Coming from a chemist perspective view more the effort involved along with frustrations of many failures verses occasional successes as nature of chemistry (and perhaps does reflect most relationships in a true sense).

How about "Drugs" vs. "Pharmaceuticals" vs "Medicines"? Term Drug use to be generally good as relates to medical use but now-a-days the illegal ones are first to come to mind I suspect when that word used. Unfortunately Pharmaceuticals also used to have immediate good connotations but with much self-inflicted damage by many bad players has altered that to a more negative. Not sure where Medicines fall in the spectrum of public opinion or understanding although wish it to be viewed as benefit (more than cost).
CMCguyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
